Cannabis for Menopause

Cannabis for Menopause

In our previous article we looked at cannabis and sexual health and sexual pleasure. This week, we’re looking at cannabis and menopause.

The symptoms of menopause are varied, unpredictable and generally undesirable: insomnia, hot flashes, fatigue, irritability, pain and more. To treat the symptoms of the changing body, women can try pharmaceuticals, herbal supplements, or just grinning and bearing it. But now, a new course of treatment is hitting the mainstream: cannabis for menopause.

Unlike pharmaceuticals and many herbal remedies, cannabinoids actually work with the body’s endocannabinoid system. They stimulate the CB1 and CB2 receptors, triggering the body’s own ability to rebalance itself. The Fine Line interviewed Dr Chin on the benefits of cannabis for menopause symptoms:

“Dr. June Chin, D.O., an integrative cannabis physician, agrees that cannabis can be useful in treating common symptoms of menopause such as anxiety. “Cannabis works to help alleviate anxiety by its mediation of a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA tells the body it’s time to power down. Since millions of neurons all over the brain respond to GABA, the effects of cannabis on GABA can include calming the nervous system, help with sleep, and relaxing muscles,” says Dr. Chin, who herself takes sublingual tinctures for sleeplessness as well as hybrid vaginal suppositories for vaginal dryness and low libido.”

Leafly reports the link between the endocannabinoid system and estrogen levels:

“Estrogen is linked to the endocannabinoid system by regulating the fatty acid hydrolase enzyme (or FAAH) that breaks down certain endocannabinoids. When estrogen levels peak, so do endocannabinoid levels and vice versa. There exists some preliminary research that suggests early onset menopause may be linked to endocannabinoid deficiencies.”

To use cannabis to alleviate your menopause symptoms you can try several different delivery methods, depending on the symptoms you wish you alleviate. For example, anxiety, irritability and pain may be alleviated by using a medicated bath soak, which is a topical delivery method. Used in combination with edibles, smoking or vaping, cannabis can provide all-day relief or reduction of your symptoms.
